LESSON EXPECTATIONS

Students should arrive on time with the necessary materials needed for the lesson. Please enter without knocking (another lesson may still be in progress) and be silent and respectful until the previous lesson has ended. Students will be asked to remove any distracting accessories during the lesson. Students are expected to keep fingernails well trimmed. The use of cell phones or other electronic devices are prohibited unless being used for recording, metronome, other musical applications, or in case of an emergency. Parents, guardians, or siblings are more than welcome in the studio during lessons but are expected to be silent and respectful.

View specific information in the tabs below.

Weekly private lessons are 40 or 60 minutes long, depending on age and level of the student. Students will attend one private lesson per week.
Monthly group classes are 60 minutes long. Students will be placed in a group class by age and grade level in school. Group classes occur on the first Friday of each month, starting the second month of the semester. Students are expected to attend each class.

The purpose of a group class is to provide a multitude of skills a private lesson cannot typically offer, including but not limited to: performance opportunities, theory, composition, improvisation, and duet or ensemble activities. Performing is an important skill every other musician is provided (strings, brass, woodwinds, and percussion almost always participate in orchestras or ensembles). Pianists are not as easily provided with this special opportunity. Performing in front of piers and learning to work, practice, and perform with others is a vital skill for every musician that can improve the ability to work with others and be more confident in areas outside of music! Regular performances can help minimize or eliminate anxiety and promote a love of performing!

Weekly, consistent practice is required and vital for piano study!! Students are provided with a notebook used to keep a record of weekly assignments. Students are expected to use their assignment book as a guide for practicing. Students should practice at least 5 days a week. Daily practice is strongly encouraged. Focus on quality over quantity.
Parental support is of the utmost importance. Parents are expected to be actively involved in their child’s piano study. At home, all parents, regardless of the student’s age, are responsibly for scheduling practice and working with the student in a supportive and encouraging manner. Students ages Pre-K to 5th grade must have a parent in the studio during lessons. Lesson attendance for parents of 6th grade (+) students is not required but encouraged. Parents are to be supportive of lessons, recitals, competitions, charity events, or other activities in which the student participates.
Students are expected to perform in a studio recital at the end of each semester. Depending on the number of students, additional recitals may be held. The Winter Recital in December will consist of standard repertoire and holiday music. The Spring Recital in May will consist of various genres of music. High-School seniors are expected to perform a solo recital of 30-60 minutes in length.
Students are encouraged to participate in competitions, contests, and festivals. Information on such events will be provided to the students and parents/guardians. Students are responsible for any necessary fees.
No refunds. No make-up lessons. School cancellations do not inherit lesson cancellation. Please contact me to verify. Upon missing group class, materials provided during the class will be given to the student at the following private lesson. Lessons cancelled by me will be rescheduled at a mutually available time. Lessons may be cancelled in advance for religious purposes (make-up at my discretion). As a courtesy, students are asked to give a 24-hour advance notice for cancellations. Repeated “no-shows” will result in lesson termination.
Summer lessons are not required but may be offered. Please inform me as soon as possible if summer lessons are desired. Schedules are more flexible in the summer. Hourly rate will remain the same, but payment will be decided on a case-by-case basis.
Lessons are an entire semester-long personal and financial agreement. If the student terminates lessons mid-semester, no refunds will be given. (Exceptions will be decided at my discretion. Exceptions may include extreme cases, such as extended illness/injury, relocation, etc.) If I terminate lessons, no refunds will be given for the month in which lessons were terminated, but any remaining post-dated tuition checks will be returned.
